Veronica Lake has been a style icon of mine for a long time, partially because of her signature Peekaboo bang and partially because of her brand of sarcasm. She can pull off some seriously sassy lines while still keeping her sweetness.

I hadn’t seen René Clair’s “I Married a Witch” (1941) until this year. I was originally interested because of Veronica, but the movie itself is well-written and seems to have originated the Friendly Neighborhood Witch trope (later seen in the much more famous Bewitched and Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series.)

The film has some really interesting optical special effects and the costumes are great; there’s a pair of fur-lined boots that could fit into Giuseppe Zanotti or Christian Louboutin’s latest collections. It’s highly recommended viewing any time, but particularly on Halloween!
